Free NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

Posted by: karenbarron2 - Posted on:

This service involves community Pharmacists having a consultation with patients to initiate routine oral contraception and will provide ongoing monitoring. Checks such as blood pressure, BMI etc. will be undertaken where necessary which may be conducted by suitably trained and competent pharmacy staff in advance of the Pharmacist consultation.

If a patient contacts us asking to see a GP about oral contraception i.e. the pill please signpost them to the Pharmacy and they will get this for FREE. There is no formal referral route if a patient wishes to access the service. The patient can just walk into the Pharmacy and ask for this service. The pharmacy will then share the outcome of the consultation via NHS mail. If the pharmacist deems that it is not clinically appropriate to supply the oral contraception they will refer the patient to their GP.
